award-collage We’ve done it again! Artistic Creations Salon located in the Windham Village Green Plaza at 33 Indian Rock Road has once again taken First Place at the Paul Mitchell of Northern New England & Michael’s School Of Hair Designs Fantasy Hair Competition. The annual contest happens every April and each year the theme changes. The event has a dual purpose as it is also a fundraiser for the students and staff at Michael’s School Of Hair Design, this year raising over $20,000. They support a block of charities including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Magic Johnson Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, just to name a few. For a full list visit Our Salon started competing in the fantasy competition 3 years ago and has taken home First Place each year they have participated. When asked what our winning formula was, I explained, “Each year when we are given the theme for the show, we start with how that theme can translate into a current trending issue in today’s world.” The styling team’s mantra is: “If you leave the audience feeling an emotion, that’s a win.” This year, the competitions theme was Barbie. “When we heard ‘Barbie’, we could not help but think about how body image is all over pop culture today,” said Alyssa, a stylist and team member at Artistic Creations. We wanted our performance to speak to the fact that a woman with curves could be a beautiful Barbie doll. Once the team decides on a direction, music is the next important decision. “We try to choose songs that are well known and powerful and this year we felt that the Meghan Trainor pop hit ‘All About the Bass’ fit perfectly,” said Donalee. From there, we work on hair, make-up, nails, wardrobe, props and choreography. “It is a big deal for our team,” said Lauren, a stylist and team member. “We start working on the looks and props in January and work right up to the day of the competition in April.” “This year’s three models had a very retro feel with looks inspired by the 50’s and early 60’s. We added a male model this year to be Ken and our big prop was a pink Cadillac Barbie dream car that the four models used to drive on and off the stage,” added Meagan, a stylist and team member. It’s a fun event where we get to push ourselves and the boundaries. In the past two competitions, the team tackled issues on equality in the LGBT world and depression and anxiety for woman in abusive relationships. Stay tuned for what we are up to for next year. You can check out last year’s winning looks in our gallery. Cheers, Donalee
Alyssa’s How To: Teasing

Alyssa’s How To: Teasing

This technique is perfect for all my clients!! Regardless of the type of hair you have, a little volume on top never hurt anybody. I understand that my fine-haired ladies are likely more interested in putting a little oomph into the crown of their heads, but once you know what you’re doing when it comes to how to tease hair, girls with any type of hair can benefit from this! This whole process can be a little intimidating and has the tendency to come out looking a little too crazy if you’re not careful, and that’s what I’m here for! What do you need?
  • Dry hair! (most important)
  • A Paul Mitchell long tail teasing comb
    • Using the teasing comb to section off hair and the thin tooth comb to tease near the root, the long tail comb will be your best friend when it comes to hair volume.
  • Awaphui Wild Ginger hair spray (my favorite)
    • Using a hairspray will keep your teased hair in place without it looking too stiff. Apply hairspray during and after styling your hair.
  • A long hair clip
    • You can really use any kind of hair clip you’re comfortable with, but the idea is to be able to section off your hair easily.
What the heck am I doing?
  • Find your part and section off the top:
    • Depending on what kind of hairstyle you’re trying to achieve, decide where you’ll want to part your hair. (If you’ll be styling it straight back, you won’t need a part.)
    • Section off your hair by creating a “top” layer and an “underneath” layer. I prefer to take the whole crown section on top and clip that up. The idea is to tease the underneath layer and lay the top layer over it, leaving hair looking finished and polished instead of messy.
  • Begin Teasing:
    • Clip the top layer away from the underneath layer. Taking your Paul Mitchell teasing comb, gently tease the underneath layer by backcombing (make an up and down motion directly on that section of hair towards the root) Remember this and start about 2 inches from the root and continue up inch by inch.
  • Smooth back the front section over the teased section:
  • Now stop teasing. I know it is fun but the bigger the tease, the bigger the hair, so it’s up to you how much to comb. Unclip the top layer and comb it smooth, laying it over the top of that bottom layer to cover the teased hair. This way, your hair looks like it’s got a ton of volume, but there’s no evidence of teasing.
  • Time to use that Awaphui hair spray: Once you style your hair, spray your hairspray and ta-da!
Our Reasons to Relay

Our Reasons to Relay

Hey everyone! Your friendly, neighborhood Relayer Lauren here. I cannot believe we are coming up on yet another year of the Relay for Life! 2015 will mark our SIXTH (!) year participating in Salem, New Hampshire’s Relay and we couldn’t be more excited. We’ve been fortunate enough to have raised over $10,000 over the past five years.

For those who may not know, the Relay for Life is an annual event put on by the American Cancer Society. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Relay. The Relay is currently held in all 50 states, in over 5,200 communities and in more than 20 countries across the globe. One of the wonderful things about Relay is that all money raised within the community stays in the community.

We hold lots of fundraisers both before and at Relay. This year, we partnered with Pampered Chef and were able to raise $200 for our team. We also did a fundraiser with Panera Bread in Manchester. At the Relay itself, we will be doing mini-manicures, hair extensions and haircuts.

One of the most important parts of the Relay (and certainly one of the moments that stays with you long after leaving the track) is the Luminaria lap. Also known as Quiet Hour, the Luminaria lap is an hour-long lap to remember those who we have lost to cancer. During the hour, they turn the lights off on the track and line the lap with Luminaria bags, a white paper bag that has a votive candle lit inside of it. The bags are decorated with photos of loved ones, names and quotes. They also will play a video slideshow of those loved ones and quite, emotional songs.

This year’s Relay is shaping up to be the best one yet. With lap themes such as “Super Heroes”, “Fashion Police”, and “Marga-RELAY-Ville”, it is sure to be another fun event, with everyone dressing up and participating in fun, team-building events such as the three-legged race and tug-of-war.

This year’s Relay for Life will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, June 20th from 11 AM to 11 PM at Salem High School’s track. It is open to the public and we would love to see you all there! Come on down and join team Artistic Creations Salon’s Cutting for a Cure!
